Taking Flight at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama

One Day at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, located in Huntsville, Alabama is an incredible place to visit, whether or not you have deep interest in space.  We visited on a Memorial Day Weekend a few years ago and found it perfect for a weekend trip from our home in Kentucky.

While here, you can simply visit the museum – which is incredible in and of itself – or combine your visit with Space Camp.  For any budding astronaut or anyone with even a mild interest in space, this is an amazing place.

Where we stayed

Huntsville Marriott | 2 nights | Huntsville, Alabama

We stayed at the Huntsville Marriott which is just steps from the Space & Rocket Center and the only hotel on property.  The location could not be beat!  The indoor/outdoor pool was a lot of fun for the kids after our day at the Space & Rocket Center.

Visiting the U.S. Space and Rocket Center

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is a Smithsonian Affiliate as well as the Official Visitor’s Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.  While here, be sure to see the Saturn V rocket, a National Historic Site.

To begin your visit, start out in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration – Saturn V Hall.  You’ll start out learning about the Space Race and journey through history along the way to current times where the mission to Mars is real.

This museum is a ton of fun for kids (and adults!) because of all the activities available.  Take a ride in a flight simulator, see if you can handle the G-Force Accelerator, climb a rock wall, and try out virtual reality!

We watched an epic movie in the INTUITIVE Planetarium on the future plans to visit Mars.  The planetarium itself features an 8K video watching experience complete with themed food and drink offerings.  We found the entire movie watching experience to be out of this world! 🙂

The crowning glory of the museum is Rocket Park, located outdoors.  Enjoy wandering among these incredible vessels that have been to space and back!
